The GCS Choral Department offers educational and performance opportunities through concert choirs and advanced vocal ensembles. These groups are designed to provide students with avenues to learn about music through the study and performance of classic and contemporary choral works.
In addition to school concerts and state competitions, high school groups are enriched by travel to competitions and festivals across the United States. At the secondary level, GCS offers Junior High Choir (7-8 grade), High School Concert Choir (9-12 grade), and advanced, auditioned Men’s and Women’s Ensembles (9-12 grade).
Choral students receive training in vocal technique, music reading, music theory, musical style, and music history. Through this study, singers develop their understanding of music’s role in life, particularly as a Christian. Current and past students use their vocal artistry to lead worship in a variety of congregations in Anchorage and the United States. Numerous graduates have received choral scholarships to colleges and universities across the nation.
The current director of the Choral Department is a member of American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), the National Association for Music Educators (NAfME), and the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS).
